I am a retired police sergeant who in 1997 left my career as a Certified Public Accountant (C.P.A.) to become a police officer with the Phoenix Police Department. Eventually, my passion for “cold case” victims and zeal for hunting the most elusive of serial killers led me to become a detective, and I spent more than ten years of my career in law enforcement working with an elite cold case homicide team that solved hundreds of murders dating back as far as the 1970s. While the police were turning over clues and seeking suspects in this grisly crime, the body of another cyclist, 17-year-old high school student Melanie Bernas, was found near the same area in early 1993. The brutal, random nature of these killings, and the fact that the Phoenix police seemed unable to locate the murderer, outraged and terrified the residents of Arizona’s largest city. These murders joined the growing roster of so-called “cold cases” that stained law enforcement agencies throughout the U.S. and denied grieving families some sort of closure.
